Michael Daehn with President John Derry of HOPE

HOPE International University continues to develop servant leaders who are impacting the world for Christ

I'm a proud graduate of HOPE International University and I am glad to see how the school continues to blossom under the leadership of Dr. John Derry. I had the opportunity to be on campus last week and President Derry sat down with me to discuss some of the exciting things that are happening on the campus.

As an alum it is great to see the university continue to grow physically as the campus expands, by attracting more students and most importantly through a genuine impact on the world. Check out the Servant Leaders in Action page on their website and you'll find graduates making a difference in churches, business and government.

If you are looking for a good Christian school to attend, or support, check out what Hope is doing.

What Christian schools do you support? How important do you think Christian education is?

Free Marketing Help for Churches and Non-Profits in June

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Monday, 04 June 07 - 01:15 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

I need your help. Do you know any churches or non-profits that need marketing?

You may know I wrote a book called Marketing the Church and created an online course that helps churches create a marketing plan. A few folks have already benefited from the class, but a lot more people could be using it. To get the word out, I am offering the class for FREE for the month of June to churches and non-profits.

The class is $400 on the site, but with this pass key they can take it for free:
MYC101PASS

To get started they should:
1. Go to www.marketingeniousUniversity.com
2. Register to create a student account
3. Click on the MYC101 class
4. Enter the pass key above when prompted and they're in

My goal is to help churches and non-profits with limited funds be more effective.

Thanks for forwarding this information on to any churches or faith based charities you think could benefit from some marketing help.

PS- They do not need to buy the book. The book is included as a free download once they get into the class.

Helpalot launches to Help Charities

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Monday, 04 June 07 - 12:43 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

Helpalot is like MySpace for Charities

I met Julius Huijnk on his blog. He was asking for some help in naming his new project to help charities. I voted for Helpalot and the character of the Knight Sir Helpalot as being the coolest. Now Julius has launched a sweet little website that allows you to look up or brag about your favorite charity.

Check out the page I made for the Gateway Locomotives.

It's good to see people using their talents to make the world a better place. Great job Julius!

What is your favorite charity? Why not promote it on on Helpalot? Don't have a favorite? Why not find one on Helpalot?

Family Friendly Book Connects Parents and Children of Faith

Michael Daehn with Author Kathy Kirk

St. Louis author Kathy Kirk has created a great tool for discussing faith with your child

Let's Talk About Salvation is a neat little book created by Kathy Kirk for parents and children to read together. This is the first in a series of seven books by Kathy in her My Child's Heart collection.

I met Kathy at a PR seminar the other day and I am impressed by her passion for sharing your faith with your children. The book has lessons that are interesting for adults, but still accessible for children and it is created for the two to read together.

I recommend you pick up a copy, visit Kathy's website, or email her for more information.

How do you share your faith with your children? Besides going to Church, what tools have you found helpful for passing your beliefs on to the next generation?

Marty Malone Helps You Build Your Church Inside and Out

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Tuesday, 15 May 07 - 03:36 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

Marty Malone helps you build your Church structure and provides great tools to build your congregation too

I had the pleasure of meeting Marty Malone yesterday. He is the VP of Malone Church Solutions. His firm designs and builds some great looking churches. But Marty is also about building God's kingdom.

Besides construction, he works with churches to develop a building plan and strategy for growth. He is even a Certified Church Consultant- that's more than what I have.

Here's 4 ways to learn more about Marty and how he can help your church:

  1. Read this great article he wrote about how the Church can reach Generation Y
  2. Attend the Church Builiding Seminar he sponsors
  3. Visit the Malone Church Solutions Website
  4. Give him a call- 618.622.0620

By the way, Marty did not know I was going to do this blog post, I just think he is cool. He even bought my Church Marketing Book before he knew who I was. Now that's a sharp character.

Do you have a plan in place for when your church grows? Is your builder a dedicated Christian with your best interests in mind?

Preacher Says 666 is Cool

Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda says there is no sin, or hell and that he is Christ

Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda sounds like a looney tune, but the guy has a worldwide following. He encourages members of his churches to get 666 tatoos. He uses public appearances, the media and a 24hr TV station to spread the word. He is the competition.

How are you using marketing tools to communicate about God and grow his kingdom?

Chain Letter Church Marketing

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Friday, 04 May 07 - 09:24 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

I got a scary prayer rug I'm supposed to mail back

Do you remember the old chain letters? You got a letter that said to copy it and send it to 10 other people for good luck. Break it and it is bad luck.

Well I just got this scary prayer rug (made of paper). It says to pray on it and then send it back so they can send it to another house. Does that mean someone was praying on this thing and then they sent it to me?

The whole thing is creepy.

If our role as Christians is to bring new people into the kingdom I don't understand how this is accomplishing the mission. Who does this benefit and how does it fulfill the great commission?

What things creep you out about your church or other church activities? How can you reach people for Christ in a way they can relate to?

Preventing Another Virginia Tech Massacre

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Thursday, 19 April 07 - 04:30 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

Gun laws and security are not the solution, it takes a change of heart

Politicians and pundits scramble to come up with reasons for the Virginia Tech killings, but these acts are not prevented by government or campus policies. What happened on Monday is pure evil. No gun law, or lack of of gun law, can prevent evil people from doing evil things.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. EPH 6:12 NIV

How are you combating evil in your sphere of influence? Who are the troubled people you avoid instead of helping or confronting?

New Zealanders are Returning to Church, but Some Don't Like It

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Thursday, 19 April 07 - 03:40 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

While New Zealanders are going back to conservative churches, some see it as a step backwards for social progress

The good news is that this story is in a main stream newspaper, the bad news is the report reads like there is an increase in crime instead of an increase in church attendance.

How do people respond when you say you are a church goer/Christian? How is your church perceived in the community?

You Can Always Market Your Church Better

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Wednesday, 11 April 07 - 09:11 AM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

There is a lot of pressure for churches to do things better, but how good is good enough?

Many churches feel the pressure to improve their marketing and communications pieces. There is always a lot riding on what churches produce because of the nature of what churches do. Knowing that what you create affects how people relate to God is a big deal.

There is also increasing pressure from members and experts (like me) who say churches should be doing a better job. On the other hand you can never be perfect.

Here is a great article by the folks at Fishook that emphasize celebrating your victories. Do the best you can, put your heart into it and let God do the rest.

What are the victories at your church? What do you do well? How do you celebrate those victories?

Satan Hates This Church Marketing Campaign

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Monday, 09 April 07 - 01:02 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

CedarCreek Church uses their creativity to get people's attention

The Satan Hates Cedar Creek campaign is a real doozy. They bought 3 billboards which direct people to a website for more information. The signs read:

  • CedarCreek Church sucks
  • I was robbed at CedarCreek Church
  • Boycott CedarCreek
All signed by Satan. Sure some people will object to using the word "sucks" in a church ad campaign, but isn't that the kind of language the Evil One would use?

Others will object that this is not what churches do. Bingo! That's why it is cool. Churches need to do something different, not just to be different, but to reflect the creativity of God in whos image we are made.

"Well Done CedarCreek"
-GOD

How are you using your creativity to reach people? What could your church do differently to connect with real people?

Cutting Edge Advertising Ideas for Churches

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Tuesday, 03 April 07 - 08:55 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

When it comes to advertising, or anything else, churches should lead the way in creativity

Ken Godevenos lists some innovative ideas for advertising your church. Why should your church bother being creative in your advertising? Because you claim to be following the creator and made in his image. If that is true, should not your communication be leading the way in creativity?

Chocolate Jesus Stirs Controversey

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Tuesday, 03 April 07 - 07:55 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

A chocolate sculpture of Jesus is slated to grace the window of a hotel amidst protests

The Gothamist reports on the new chocolate Jesus. I'm all for artistic expression, but this thing is just ugly. How are you supposed to know it is Jesus? It reminds me of the Visible Man toy from my childhood. I have always felt bad eating chocolate rabbits, and lately chocolate crosses, but I draw the line at chocolate Christs.

Gleaning Talent from the Pews

MSDB2-Black-Bulb Crop 309x309.png Tuesday, 03 April 07 - 04:23 PM (GMT -06:00)
By Michael Daehn in General

Many churches borrow ideas because they lack the creative talent on their staff, but is your staff the only place to look?

I just saw this poll on Church Marketing Sucks that shows many churches borrow ideas and materials from other churches because they don't have the creative juices flowing on their staff. I think this may be a function of overworked staffs not having time to be creative, but why not look to the congregation for help?

I hear church leaders complaining that their people don't get involved. I say that it is your responsibility to provide ways for them to be involved. If you are truly leading then you are finding way to empower your members to particpate, not doing everything yourself. In this way you are serving your followers and providing them with ways to get connected. Now that's what I call servant leadership.
